LGBTQIA+ Rights in Canada
Gov of Canada LGBTI Laws
Canada offers numerous protections for LGBTQ2I individuals, including the right to marry, adopt, and serve in the military. Both the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms and the Canadian Human Rights Act safeguard against discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.

Canada advocates for the protection and promotion of human rights for LGBTQ2I individuals worldwide, emphasizing that everyone should have equal access to fundamental rights regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. While nearly 30 countries, including Canada, recognize same-sex marriage, over 70 nations continue to criminalize consensual same-sex acts, with some imposing the death penalty.
Federal 2SLGBTQI+ Action Plan
Launched on August 28, 2022, the Federal 2SLGBTQI+ Action Plan aims to advance rights and equality for 2SLGBTQI+ individuals in Canada, focusing on creating a more equitable and inclusive country. This plan builds on efforts since 2015 to address disparities and foster a safer environment for 2SLGBTQI+ communities now and in the future.
Gov of Canada Trans Rights Protections
The Canadian government has strengthened protections for transgender and gender-diverse individuals through the Canadian Human Rights Act and Bill C-16, which make discrimination based on gender identity and expression illegal.
